Tree of Life
“And he showed
me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal,
proceeding from
the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its
street, and o either side of the
river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits,
each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of
the tree were for the healing of the nations.” Rev.

There are many types of quilts expressing friendship or
commemorating
Special occasions, quilts made for a bride’s dowry,
utilitarian ones made hurriedly
for winter warmth, and expertly worked quilts which
became heirlooms. American
quilts have always reflected major aspects of the
historical, political, economic, family
and religious life of the people.
The quilts in the exhibition were inspired
by familiar Bible stories or references.
They are from the private collection of The Reverend Dr.
Donald Graham and Mrs. Nancy Graham of Berea, Kentucky.
Although all were made within the past 30 years, several
patterns and names are old: all reflect the continuing
importance of biblical religion in American life.
Biblical quilts are somewhat of an illusion.
For the most part, they are not obvious artistic
representations of the topic but are patterns that
suggest a feeling in the viewer, “Hosanna” one of the
patterns on the suggest palm branches by the pattern’s
radiating sharp pointed patterns. The interpretation of
the quilts is, like much of the biblical interpretation,
left to the quilter and observer.
There are two types of quilts – patchwork
and appliqué. Patchwork quilts have the patterns
stitched INTO the quilts fabric. Appliqué quilts have
the pattern stitched ONTO the quilt. The collection
contains sixteen patchwork quilts and two appliqués.
Rev. Graham is an ordained minister of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and for forty
years has served Kirksville Christian Church near Berea,
KY. Also, he and his wife and daughter own two shops in
Berea, the Appalachian Arts & Crafts Shop and The Quilt
