I'm a landscape artist using
soft pastels. My work is created on sanded pastel paper
and for some work I use an oil wash for the under
painting before applying the pastel.
I create images from actual
places preferring to use nature's information and
inspiration for my resource. I believe a landscape
artist should paint the area the artist knows
intimately. The Appalachian landscape is so variable and
beautiful that I never tire of depicting scenes from
Kentucky and West Virginia.
I paint what I see, but distill
the details of nature to focus on the essence of the
landscape, adjusting the color to emphasize the light
and shadow. I hope the viewer connects to the sense of
place that attracted me to the scene.

What began 10 years ago as a watercolor
class under instructor Diana Kilburn has evolved into a
group of artists who continue to inspire and support
each other. The Escape Artists paint together monthly,
travel together often, and attend art openings, museum
shows and workshops with other artists. The artists have
a gallery and studio at the Carnegie Art Center in
Somerset. They have exhibited their group shows at
galleries in Berea, Danville, London, Somerset and other
cities. Eight of the women live in Somerset and Diana
