Beginning Machine Quilting

Class description:    If you want to learn to free motion machine quilt, this is the class for you!    Layering your quilt, exercises to learn to free motion movements in your machine, stippling, meandering, feathers, “McTavishing” method, trapunto, the best threads to use for quilting, type of batting to use, needles, machine preparation, quilting from a pattern (feathers), and much more will be taught.

 

This is a technique class and only samples will be finished.

 

Class limit:    20

 

Supplies furnished:   Fabric with batting, all patterns that will be taught.

 

Supplies for students to bring:   Sewing machine in good working order that will drop the feed dogs,  sewing machine manual, needles, free motion quilting foot or darning foot, extra bobbins,  various threads (colors).

 

Although this is a beginning class, all levels are welcome!

 

 

Stained glass Quilt Blocks

Instructors:  Susan Rice & Sandy Ramsey

 

In this class you will learn a few basic stained glass techniques and create your own stained glass quilt block.

 

You will:

                

Choose your pattern ( 4 patch, two color pinwheel, three color pinwheel, three color block in a block),

                 Choose your colors,

                 Cut the glass,

                 Apply copper foil to the edges,

                 Solder it together,

                 Frame it with Zinc,

Apply a hanger,

Clean and polish the piece.

 

This class will be about 4 hours long and will cost $ 55.00.  

The finished quilt block will be approximately 8”x8”.

 

Your glass, tools, and other supplies will be provided by the instructors.

 You will need to bring an apron or an old shirt to cover your clothes.

 

Class size is limited to 10 persons.

Mended Hearts

Instructor:  Shirley Lips

This quilt measures 40”x56” and can be made larger by increasing the number of the 4”x6”  blocks. Students will learn the Stack-n-Slash and Switch-n-Stitch technique as well as Steam-A-Seam/machine appliqué to make this charming little heart quilt. Other techniques and/or skills taught by Shirley will include rotary cutting, proper pressing, and color placement.

Using the “Eleanor Burns” method to make the pinwheels

come out with perfect points,  this half-day class will be

exciting and quick. Choose fabrics in the color scheme of your

choice for this fun project. The table runner could be the

perfect accent for spring, summer, fall & winter.

1/3 yd  fabric # 1 (quarter triangles & 1st border—green in

                                  sample)

1/4 yd fabric # 2 (quarter triangles—muslin in sample)

1/4 yd fabric # 3 (half-square triangles—red in sample)

1 2/3 yd fabric # 4 (setting triangles & outer border– print in

                                  sample)

1/3 yd (1/2 yd if using stripe on bias) for binding

                                                                                                                                                         If you love the look of appliqué but don’t have the time or talent for the delicate handwork, Invisible Machine                                                                                                                                                          Appliqué is for you!  Using tools already in your sewing room (zig-zag foot, freezer paper, iron) and adding a few                                                                                                                                                          inexpensive items (fabric glue and mono-filament thread), you can produce the look of the traditional and folk                                                                                                                                                          appliqué you love.  The six blocks we will work on in class (all flowers) are part of the larger Mountain Laurel                                                                                                                                                          Quilt Club Sampler 2008, or with sashes and borders will make a lovely wall hanging, table runner or baby quilt.

Rugs from Rags

Make a rug from old scraps of fabric or clothing.  

*Level: Beginning   Book Cost $10

*Skills learned: weaving, coordination, linear cognitive abilities, recycling and traditional history.

 *Preperation for class would be to cut strips into 1.5, 2 or 3 inch strips depending on the project.

 (placemat, table runner or rug)  

*Supplies needed: Unwanted or unloved fabric, old clean clothes, old clean bedsheets, almost anything

that can be woven. My granny used to weave with plastic bread wrappers.   *I will have some frames available to sell.

 Purchase is not required for class. The book shows detailed instructions for making a frame. I will have on hand

several placemat, table runner and rug sized frames. If students want to order frames for class, my husband makes

 them and would have them ready for class. Placemat frames would run $20, Table runner frames $30 and rug

frames $40.

      For Invisible Machine Applique
      Sewing machine with zig-zag capability and the usual machine sewing supplies

· Invisible or monofilament thread (.004 works best)

· Freezer Paper (some available in class)

· Fabric Glue (best if temporary, acid free, water soluble, and some available in class)

· Small iron (the Clover mini-irons are great!)

· Applique pins (or regular quilting straight pins will also work)

· Six - 9" background fabric squares 

· Fabrics (scraps or fat quarters, prewashed) for flowers, stems and leaves (a variety of lights,

        mediums and darks will work well)

· Small sharp scissors for cutting fabric (5" size works great!)

· Small spray bottle with water in it

· Pencil

 

· For Hand Quilting
Hand sewing supplies (thread-snippers, seam ripper, etc.)

· Something to quilt -- Between 16" and 20" square would be ideal.  Either a plain muslin piece, or an orphan quilt block with borders would work wonderfully!

· Backing for your little quilt top (about 2 to 4 inches larger on all sides than your small quilt)

· Thimble (we'll also try several kinds during class)

· Hand quilting thread

· Between needles (size 8, 9 or 10 is good)

· A roll of 1" masking tape

· Optional:  Quilting Hoop  (Instructor will have several available for use in the class)

Instructor will provide marking tools, basting pins, finger protectors, batting, and handouts.
