The competition will take place on April 5th. on the Union College Campus at Conway Boatman Chapel.  Each contestant will receive prizes including a $500.00 scholarship from Union College, the “Kentucky’s First College in the Mountains”.  The chosen Queen will receive a $250.00 cash scholarship to be paid to any college she is enrolled in toward tuition costs.  She also will receive a $10,000.00 scholarship to Union College as an academic incentive if she should plan to make Union College her higher education choice.   Our reigning Queen, Miss Alison Lovely  appeared frequently at Kentucky Tourism events, even on occasion with Congressman Hal Rogers promoting Tourism and the Pride Campaign in Southern and Eastern Kentucky.   A student from Magoffin County,  she also has been featured in tourism brochures, calendars and was showcased in area Parades and Festivals.  This year’s Queen will assume many of these same duties and will receive the same type of exposure and recognition. We do encourage your school to take part in this event and to recommend girls who will be a positive role-model for young people across our great state.

Schools may select the contestants according to the merits which they deem appropriate for a young lady who will be designated as an ambassador for your school.  Attached is an application/fact sheet (found in the entry forms section of the website) to be completed and returned by your representative(s) to us, no later than March 15th.  She should also include one unframed 8x10 photograph of herself, to the Barbourville Tourism by that same date.  A letter of congratulations and instructions for your chosen representative(s) has been included as well. We hope that you will take time to read it…becoming better acquainted with the expectations for your candidate(s).   Upon choosing your representative(s), please give each the letter of instruction and application so that she can complete and mail it to us by the March 15th deadline.  Schools should make and distribute copies of these to all of the contestants which they recommend.

We understand and appreciate the fact that it will take time from your busy schedule to select these young ladies.   However, we hope that you will recognize that for the recipient, it is indeed an honor as well as an educational opportunity, to be chosen.

Text Box: Guidelines for Contestants:

CONGRATULATIONS! Your school, after screening several possible candidates has selected you to be one of its official representatives at the Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism’s Annual Miss Redbud Trails Pageant to be held on April 5th, 2008. Your school is also, in effect, bestowing upon you a $500 non-renewable scholarship on behalf of Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky, if you should compete. The Queen, once chosen, will then receive a $10,000 scholarship from Union College! This scholarship is based on a $2,500 per year renewable option. A $250.00 CASH scholarship will also be awarded to our Queen which can be used to pay expenses at any chosen college or University at which she enrolls during the one-year period following the pageant. In addition to this, The Redbud Trails Queen will be featured on area tourism brochures describing the Redbud Trail Festival, and in several Festival parades within the vicinity. She will also receive prizes and gift certificates from area merchants and individuals. Last year’s Queen, Miss Alison Lovely appeared frequently at tourism related events, even with Congressman Hal Rogers at community functions, which received media and television coverage. We have an impressive schedule for this year’s chosen Queen as well.
As the title implies, this is a modified “Debutante” style pageant. There is no entry fee to be paid by you or your sponsors, but is based on a selective process by your individual High School. You have been honored to represent your school and will act as a “Good-Will Ambassador” on behalf of it. Our Queen will be chosen regarding her ability to effectively communicate formally in interview and informally in a social setting with an impartial, experienced panel of judges. The third aspect of selection will consist of beauty, poise and presentation in evening gown at the Pageant itself. Percentages for scores are as follows:

Private interview: 35%
Social interaction skills: 25%
Beauty, poise and presentation in evening gown: 35%
Onstage introduction: 5%

The private interview with Judges will consist of a ten-minute conversation during which they will discuss interesting things included on your fact sheet and application. They may ask for your personal viewpoints on social issues or current events, as well. Attire for this should be a suit or church-type clothing. No cocktail dresses, jeans or formals…please!
Later that afternoon, you will attend a luncheon reception at Union College where your social interaction skills will be noted. At this event, you should wear a very dressy, knee-length dress, appropriate for a tea.
At the evening program, your poise and presentation in evening gown will be assessed on stage. We encourage you to wear a full-skirted ball gown in either white or pastel colors, in keeping with our “Debutante” theme. On stage that evening, you will introduce yourself with a short statement telling us a bit about your home town or community and what it might offer to Kentucky Tourism.
You are also asked to submit an unframed 8x10 photograph (preferably color) of yourself for display and program purposes. The City of Barbourville will be displaying these photographs on the Court Square for the local residents and Redbud Festival visitors to admire. They will be returned to you.
Please be prompt in submitting your application and materials to us. We must receive everything before March 15th , for pageant organizational purposes. We will be printing a pageant program and must have your photograph by that date for it to appear in it.
